How to run correctlyRunning is a straight forward sport. All you need is a quality pair of footwear for your size such as mens trainers size 9 and some sports gear and you’re away. Because there are such low barriers to entry, many people do not receive the correct instruction regarding proper running technique. Poor running technique will waste your energy and can also lead to injuries.

Information about correct running technique is widely available on the Internet but it is only there if you look for it. A lot of people who run regularly are not actually aware that they should improve their technique. This can be putting a lot of unnecessary strain on the joints and increasing chances of injury.

Correct running technique is the best method for avoiding injury as well as to use your energy most effectively. They key areas that can cause injury include;

Running flat footed and not ensuring that the knees are lifted high enough.

Twisting the body by swinging the arms across instead of forward and back.

Putting pressure on the back by leaning backwards.

Landing on the heal instead of the ball of the foot. This can result in injuries to many areas of the leg, foot, knees and back. This method also acts as a break as you are pushing away from the direction that you are running. This results in energy being wasted.

The key elements to consider when looking to incorporate correct running technique include;

Landing on the ball of the foot. This is where the body’s natural shock absorbers are. As well as this, it means that you will always be pushing in the direction that you are running.

Leaning slightly forward.

Swinging the arms forward to back.
